Wolves have reached an agreement with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal for the transfer of their captain, Ruben Neves, for a fee of 55 million euros (£47 million). The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder had one year remaining on his contract with Wolves.
Neves had expressed his ambition to seek new challenges, including interest from Barcelona. However, Barcelona failed to present a satisfactory offer, prompting Neves to explore the opportunity of joining the Saudi league, where several high-profile players have made moves recently.
Players like Karim Benzema, who joined Al Ittihad on a free transfer, and N'Golo Kante of Chelsea, who is linked with a move, have been associated with transfers to the Saudi league. Cristiano Ronaldo also made a move to Al Nassr in December.
Wolves view the sale of Neves as a favorable deal, as it allows them to generate funds for manager Julen Lopetegui to strengthen the squad. Since his arrival from Porto in 2017, Neves has played a central role in Wolves' success.
He contributed to their Championship victory in 2018 and helped them achieve two consecutive seventh-placed finishes in the Premier League. In 2020, Wolves reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League but were eliminated by Lopetegui's Sevilla. However, the team struggled last season, finishing 13th after being at the bottom of the table during Christmas.
During his time at Wolves, Neves has made 253 appearances across all competitions, scoring 30 goals.
