Neves stays put, Varane's summer exit, Murtough's Role: Latest football transfer updates

Posted : 22 November 2023
In the latest football updates, Ruben Neves is set to remain with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia and is not expected to go on loan to either Newcastle or Arsenal in the upcoming January transfer window. The Premier League's failed vote to block signings from associated clubs led to speculation about a potential loan move for Neves, but the player has expressed his willingness to stay in Saudi Arabia.

Arsenal's interest in Neves also raised the possibility of an awkward reunion, given Neves's previous criticism of the club. However, injuries to key Al Hilal players Neymar and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic mean Neves is likely to stay at least until the end of the season.

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane, currently the fourth-choice center-back, is expected to leave the club in the summer, according to reports. Despite losing his starting position under manager Erik ten Hag, Varane is not seeking a mid-season exit.

While a return to Real Madrid has been suggested, Varane is reportedly more inclined towards a move to Italy or Saudi Arabia. United's sources indicate that Varane's departure in the summer would suit both the player and the club, with interest already arising from Saudi Arabia and a potential wage increase.

In the midst of potential changes at Manchester United, football director John Murtough anticipates maintaining his role during the club's transition, especially with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's investment on the horizon. Despite earlier speculation about Murtough leaving the club, he is hopeful of continuing even beyond the period of impending changes.

The Telegraph's report indicates that various individuals, including Dougie Freedman, Paul Mitchell, Lee Congerton, Paolo Maldini, Ricky Massara, and Andrea Berta, are being considered for a director of football role as part of the anticipated reshuffle. While Ratcliffe had hoped to finalize the deal by now, uncertainties remain, and an official announcement may be delayed until after the Thanksgiving holidays in the US.
