Netherlands Faces Injury Concerns Ahead of Euro 2024 Opener Against Poland

Posted : 15 June 2024

The injury-plagued Netherlands begin their Euro 2024 journey against Poland in Hamburg, aiming to capitalize on their recent improvements under Louis van Gaal after years of disappointment. Despite failing to qualify for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, the Dutch reached the World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar before losing to Argentina on penalties. Now under Ronald Koeman's guidance for a second stint, the Netherlands enter the tournament with high expectations despite midfield injury setbacks.

Denzel Dumfries highlighted the team's hunger for success, emphasizing the importance of utilizing the experience gained by several players in previous tournaments. However, injuries have hit the Oranje midfield, with Frenkie de Jong, Teun Koopmeiners, and Marten de Roon withdrawing from the squad. Georginio Wijnaldum's leadership will be crucial, with Ryan Gravenberch expected to step up, and late call-up Ian Maatsen bringing fresh confidence after his Champions League success.

Despite the setbacks, Koeman remains focused on the task ahead and is unwilling to dwell on injury absences. Matthijs de Ligt, looking to put past disappointments behind him, is determined alongside Virgil van Dijk to anchor the defense. Poland, missing Robert Lewandowski due to injury, are eager to challenge the Dutch. Coach Michal Probierz stressed their intention to play proactive football against the Netherlands, aiming to prove their progress as a team and not merely survive on the field.

Poland's attacking options may include Karol Swiderski and Krzysztof Piatek, with Arkadiusz Milik ruled out. Despite the absence of key players, Poland aims to make a statement against the Dutch.
