Posted : 11 August 2023
The next six international matches of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, beginning with the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against São Tomé and Principe on September 10, 2023, as well as the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.

The President of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, stated this when he paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Umo Eno, at Government House, Uyo.

He thanked the government for its previous support to the team, adding that the winning record as well as the conducive environment in the state informed the decision of the country’s football body to choose Uyo as the host city.

NFF President was accompanied by the South-South representative on the NFF board, Otuekong Nse Essien and some state FA Chairmen including the Chairman of Akwa Ibom state Football Association Normalization Committee, Prince Bonny Nyong, as well as other stakeholders.

Gusau said that he was in the state to solicit the support and cooperation of the state Government with regard to the hosting of these matches and announced that the Godswill Akpabio International stadium has been approved by both FIFA and CAF to host international matches in the country.

In his response, Governor Umo Eno assured the NFF President of the support and cooperation of the Government and people of the state and stated that the Nest of Champions is an internationally acclaimed stadium which maintenance contract with construction giants, Julius Berger, he has recently renewed.

Also in attendance were Akwa Ibom state Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, the Chairman of Akwa United Football Club, Elder Paul Bassey and members of Akwa Ibom state Football Association Normalization Committee.
