Nashville and Inter Miami draw 0-0, first to stop Messi
Posted : 31 August 2023
Around two months following his debut for the Florida-based team, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami encountered a significant milestone - their first goalless match. This came to pass as Nashville hosted Florida on a midweek evening in an Eastern Conference league match, resulting in a 0-0 draw. For Nashville, this outcome provided a measure of satisfaction after their loss to Inter Miami in the League Cup final, where the match concluded 9-10 in a penalty shootout.
This game marked the second league appearance for Messi and Inter Miami since returning from a break centered around the cup. Preceding this pause, Inter Miami endured an 11-game stretch without a victory, encountering defeat in eight instances. This meant that the team's most recent league triumph prior to their post-offseason return was on May 14.
Just a few days ago, the unfavorable league streak was broken as Miami, with Messi in the lineup, defeated Red Bull New York 0-2, elevating them to the 14th spot in the Eastern Conference standings. However, this encounter resulted in a stalemate. Inter Miami coach Tata Martino acknowledged the need to move forward. Although Messi had opportunities to influence the game with his free-kick prowess, he couldn't replicate his previous magic.
Taking advantage of their rivalry, Inter Miami's official platform playfully poked at the situation, suggesting that the absence of claims of unfair play might be due to the team's occasional losses.
Following 24 rounds, Inter Miami remains in 14th place within the Eastern Conference, accumulating 22 points (with three games still pending), and currently sits ahead of only Toronto. On the other hand, Nashville occupies the seventh position, having garnered 39 points with two games yet to play.
