Nasarawa United outclassed Flight FC of Gboko with a convincing 2-0 victory to seal a spot in the Round of 32 in the 2025 President Federation Cup. The round 64 tie was decided on Wednesday at the Jos International Stadium, Plateau State.
Centre forward Ugochukwu Leonard marked his return to the Solid Miners with a delightful goal in the 6th minute after being set up by John Joshua.
Eleven minutes later, right back Kabir Balogun increased the tally with a magical set-piece finish, driving the ball past the opposition goalkeeper. United led 2-0 heading into the interval.
The second half saw no alterations to the scoreline, as the Premier League side advanced to the next phase of Nigeria’s oldest knockout inter-club football competition.
Chairman of Nasarawa United FC, Mr. Solomon Babanjah, was present to receive the Nasarawa State delegation, led by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, who came to cheer the Solid Miners to victory.
Former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa, Professor Onje Gye-wado, as well as the Chief Whip and Member representing Akwanga North Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa, were part of the state government's delegation, motivating the team to achieve success.
United will know their Round of 32 opponents after Ijele FC of Enugu and Lautau FC of Jigawa clash in the other Round of 64 fixture.
Nasarawa United have twice been runners-up in the National Challenge Cup competition, behind the defunct FC Ifeanyi Ubah in 2016 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, and Bayelsa United in 2021 at the Sam Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo State, after regulation time ended in a draw.
The Solid Miners will return to Lafia, where they are scheduled for a match-day 30 clash against the league's defending champions, Rangers International FC, at the Lafia City Stadium on Friday, 21st March 2025, at 3 p.m.
