Nasarawa United defender Abubakar Aliyu Yerima has dedicated the club’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) promotion ticket to his ailing mum, who is suffering from a stroke.
Abubakar revealed this shortly after helping his team secure a 2-1 victory over Sporting Supreme FC of Abuja in their final group match of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super-8.
The match, held at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, propelled Nasarawa United to an unassailable nine points at the top of the Super-8 northern group, positioning them within two matches of being crowned overall NNL champions.
In addition, Abubakar stated that the team's next objective is to clinch the lower division championship title to boost their confidence for next season’s campaign in the top-flight NPFL.
The industrious right-back acknowledged that the players will require high levels of confidence, luck, and encouragement to excel in the NPFL, especially after the tough encounter against Sporting Supreme.
Abubakar remarked, "The match was very challenging for us initially, but we recovered and scored two goals. I appreciate our performance, and I'm particularly pleased with our first-half goal. Without it, the match would have been even tougher for us."
"I dedicate this ticket to my mum because she is unwell. Despite having a stroke, she continues to pray for me," he added.
Expressing his joy at being part of the squad that has returned The Solid Miners to the NPFL, especially in his first season with the Lafia-based club, Abubakar said, "Last season, I wasn't with them. This is my debut season with the club, and I am thrilled to be one of the players who joined and contributed to their promotion to the premier league. It's an incredible feeling."
"Our next goal is to win the cup. This achievement will bring us great fortune and motivation," concluded Abubakar.
