Gusau stated that awarding the hosting rights of the most prestigious pre-season soccer tournament, tagged the 'Gusau/Ahlan Cup,' to the Nasarawa State Government was a decision made by the Organizing Committee. He added that the verdict was inspired by the commitment of Governor Abdullahi Sule towards promoting sports, particularly football, in Nasarawa State and the nation at large.
Gusau disclosed that the tournament will be held in Lafia prior to the commencement of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season.
In his remarks, shortly after receiving the hosting flag, Nasarawa State Governor Engineer Abdullahi Sule thanked the Organizing Committee for selecting Nasarawa State as the official host for the next edition of the tournament.
Governor Sule assured Nigerians that his government would provide the necessary logistics for the successful hosting of the tournament.
He reaffirmed that his administration is resolute in its support for any initiative that would develop sports activities in the state and the country as a whole.
For his part, the Coordinator of the tournament, Alhaji Abahurarai Dahiru, who provided a narrative on the rich history recorded by the brand within a short span since its inaugural edition, stated that the tournament was initiated to appreciate the commitments of the NFF president and his board members, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau MON and Alhaji Sharif Rabi'u Inuwa Ahlan, respectively.
He mentioned that the duo has invested significantly in promoting the round leather game in the country.
Abahurarai noted that 16 football teams participating in the tournament annually are drawn from the NPFL and NNL leagues and are expected to compete fiercely in next year's tournament.
Dignitaries accompanying the NFF president at the event included NFF board members and State Football Association chairmen.
It should be recalled that the 2024 edition of the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Soccer Tournament was hosted by the Plateau State government in Jos, where Lobi Stars Football Club of Makurdi was crowned champions after defeating Wikki Tourists Football Club of Bauchi 4-3 via penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time.
