In a rather humiliating turn of events, Napoli has been eliminated from the 2023/24 Coppa Italia, suffering a 4-0 loss to Frosinone at home on Tuesday night. The Diego Maradona Stadium witnessed all four goals in the last 25 minutes, courtesy of Enzo Barrenechea, Giuseppe Caso, Walid Cheddira, and Abdou Harroui.
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, initially on the bench, came on as a substitute for Giovanni Simeone in the 63rd minute, just a minute before Frosinone's first goal. Frosinone took the lead in the 65th minute with a free header from six yards by Enzo Barrenechea, looping into the far top corner.
Napoli's situation worsened when captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo's back pass was intercepted by Caso, resulting in a one-on-one goal against Pierluigi Gollini. Despite Napoli's efforts to stage a comeback, their resolve crumbled when Frosinone earned a penalty, converted by Walid Cheddira in the first minute of added time.
In the dying moments, a through ball sent Abdou Harroui sprinting down the center, securing Frosinone's fourth goal in a one-on-one against Gollini. The final whistle was drowned out by the resounding boos from the disappointed crowd.
