Napoli's Champions League hopes dim after draw with Frosinone

Posted : 14 April 2024

Napoli's aspirations for securing a spot in the Champions League faced further adversity following a 2-2 draw against struggling Frosinone during their Serie A encounter on Sunday. Walid Cheddira's impressive performance marked his first brace in Italy's top flight, earning Frosinone a valuable point in Naples.

This outcome compounded Napoli's struggles, leaving the ailing Italian champions in eighth position, trailing sixth-placed Roma by six points. Roma's upcoming match against Udinese offered them an opportunity to widen the gap, amplifying the pressure on Napoli.

With Italian clubs excelling in European competitions, securing a top-five finish in Serie A has become almost synonymous with Champions League qualification. However, Napoli's diminishing chances of clinching such a position became apparent as they were met with boos from the sparse crowd at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Francesco Calzona's side had briefly appeared poised to secure sixth place after Victor Osimhen's goal in the 63rd minute. Yet, Cheddira's second goal for Frosinone, arriving just ten minutes later, dashed Napoli's hopes and emphasized their precarious position.

Despite Frosinone's status near the bottom of the table, they showcased resilience, staying just inside the relegation zone with the same points tally as 17th-placed Verona. Eusebio Di Francesco's team demonstrated their mettle in securing a draw, with goalkeeper Alex Meret initially emerging as Napoli's hero by saving Matias Soule's penalty in the first half. Frosinone's recent string of draws against formidable opponents like Genoa and Bologna, in addition to Napoli, buoyed their prospects of avoiding relegation.

Looking ahead, Inter Milan's forthcoming match against Cagliari at the San Siro presents an opportunity for them to solidify their dominance in Serie A. With a substantial 14-point lead over AC Milan, Inter is poised to claim their 20th league title, potentially setting the stage for a decisive Milan derby the following week. A victory against Cagliari would ensure that Inter could secure the Scudetto in the derby, irrespective of AC Milan's result against Sassuolo.
