Although Napoli did not provide a specific timeline for his recovery, reports from Italian media estimate that the Italy international will miss at least six weeks of action.
Buongiorno, who joined Napoli from Torino during the summer transfer window, has become an integral part of the squad, making 15 starts this season and scoring one goal.
The 24-year-old has also been a key figure for the Italian national team, earning nine international caps since his debut.
Napoli currently sit two points behind Serie A leaders Atalanta as they look to maintain their title challenge.
Their next fixture sees them travel to face Genoa this Saturday, where they will have to cope without the influential defender.
