Napoli Face Inter Milan in Crucial Serie A Clash Amid Worst Run of Form

Posted : 27 February 2025

Napoli’s crucial Serie A clash with Inter Milan on Saturday comes at a difficult moment, as the former league leaders endure their worst run of form this season. After surrendering top spot with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Como last weekend, Napoli now trail Inter by a single point and face growing pressure from Atalanta.

Without a win in February, they have struggled to maintain leads, dropping valuable points in recent matches. Their poor second-half display against Como frustrated coach Antonio Conte, who criticized the team's lack of resilience under pressure.

Conte expressed concern over his squad’s mental strength, stating that Napoli had repeatedly failed to handle the psychological burden of leading the league. He emphasized the need for greater determination, noting that losing due to tactical reasons was acceptable, but lacking the desire to fight was not.

With David Neres still unavailable and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa dealing with a calf injury, Conte is likely to rely on Philip Billing again in midfield following his solid debut.

Meanwhile, Inter should receive a boost with the return of Marcus Thuram, who has rejoined training after recovering from an ankle injury. A win for Inter would provide a crucial advantage at the top of the table ahead of their Champions League knockout ties against Feyenoord.

Beyond Napoli and Inter, Atalanta remains a potential title contender, sitting just three points off the summit. They have a favorable fixture against Venezia before the showdown in Naples, presenting an opportunity to keep pace with the leaders.

Inter, however, must also keep an eye on AC Milan, who have an important week ahead with a midweek clash against Bologna followed by a showdown with Lazio. Meanwhile, Juventus, currently fourth, host Verona on Monday, while Sergio Conceicao’s Milan side desperately need two wins to keep their slim Champions League qualification hopes alive.

A key figure in the title race is Ademola Lookman, who has been instrumental in Atalanta’s push for an unexpected Scudetto. The Nigerian forward netted twice in a dominant win over Empoli last weekend, bringing his season tally to 17 goals in all competitions.

However, his relationship with coach Gian Piero Gasperini remains tense after a penalty dispute, with Lookman previously pushing for a move to Paris Saint-Germain. With Gasperini set to leave in 2026—or possibly even sooner—this season may represent the best chance for both Lookman and Atalanta to secure a historic league title.
