Napoli considers Bologna's Dutch-Nigerian striker as Osimhen's replacement

Posted : 19 March 2024

Amidst swirling speculations regarding Victor Osimhen's future at Napoli, the Italian club is actively scouting for a replacement for the Nigerian forward, with three promising candidates emerging as frontrunners.

Osimhen, who signed a contract extension until 2026 in December 2023, holds the title of Napoli's highest-paid player ever, with an eye-watering release clause of 130 million euros.

However, despite this lucrative deal, interest from top clubs across Europe persists, and with the approaching summer transfer window, Osimhen's departure from Napoli seems increasingly probable.

In response, Napoli has ramped up their search for a suitable successor. The club has identified three players who could potentially fill Osimhen's shoes, each possessing a mix of talent and affordability.

According to reports from Tuttomercatoweb, leading Napoli's wishlist is Lille striker David Jonathan. The Canadian forward has showcased his skills in Ligue 1, with 15 goals and 2 assists in 26 league appearances.

With an estimated price tag of around 50 million euros, David presents an appealing option for Napoli, aligning well with the club's financial constraints.

Moreover, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has included Dutch-Nigerian talent Joshua Zirkzee in the club's list of targets. Zirkzee, a former Bayern Munich prospect, has experienced a resurgence at Bologna under the tutelage of Thiago Motta, registering 10 goals and 4 assists in 27 league matches.

Rounding off the trio of contenders is Santiago Gimenez, a versatile left-footed forward currently playing for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie. Gimenez has enjoyed a prolific season, scoring 21 goals and providing 4 assists in 25 league appearances.

As Napoli braces for the potential departure of their star striker, Osimhen's future destination remains uncertain. The Nigerian international, sidelined due to inflammation of a scar from a previous injury, is unlikely to feature in Nigeria's upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali.
