Napoli addresses Osimhen's TikTok incident, clarifying intentions

Posted : 29 September 2023
The Serie A champions, Napoli, found themselves embroiled in controversy over a TikTok video posted on their official page, seemingly mocking their star player, Victor Osimhen, for a missed penalty during a 0-0 draw with Bologna in Serie A.

This incident came as a surprise given that Osimhen, a 24-year-old Nigerian international, had been performing well, scoring three goals in the first five matches of the season.

The post, which ridiculed Osimhen's penalty miss, drew significant backlash from fans on social media, questioning the club's decision to publicly berate their own player.

Napoli later released a statement asserting that they never intended to offend or make fun of Osimhen, emphasizing his value to the club and explaining that the use of expressive language on social media platforms like TikTok is often playful and light-hearted.

However, Osimhen's agent hinted at potential legal action against the club, condemning the video as unacceptable and damaging to the player.

In response to the situation, the Federal Government of Nigeria expressed its concern and commitment to reaching out to Italy, Napoli, and Osimhen to address the issue through diplomatic channels, emphasizing the importance of resolving the matter in a decorous manner.

The incident shed light on the delicate balance between using humor on social media and avoiding actions that could harm a player's reputation or morale.
