Naija Super 8: It's Southwest derby for the final

Posted : 15 July 2023
As the curtain is about to be drawn on the money-spinning pre season tournament on Sunday, its going to be a Southwest affair as two teams in the region, newly promoted to Nigeria Premier League, Sporting Lagos FC will square up against high flying Remo Stars who will be flying Nigeria's colours in the next season's CAF Champions League.

Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that both clubs, having fought their way through the finals, will interestingly provide the much needed fireworks on Sunday at the finals to be played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.

In the first semifinals match of the day, Remo Stars defeated Lobi Stars by 2-1.

Goals from Dela Akorli and Nduka Junior are enough to propel the Sky Blue Stars to the final, while Joseph Atule's penalty goal for Lobi Stars came as a mere consolation.

In the second semi-finals match, Sporting Lagos FC overpowered Akwa United FC 3-1 in a fire-cracking match.

Sporting Lagos FC gallantly mustered a comeback from  behind to earn the bragging rights in the battle of wildcards.

Now, it's a South West Derby in Sunday's final as Sporting Lagos FC engage Remo Stars in a repeat of their group A contest.

Sporting Lagos made it to the last four after finishing top of Group A with seven points from three games. They held Enyimba International to a goalless draw, defeated Remo Stars 2-1 and beat Katsina United 1-0 in the final group game to make it to the semis.

However, enroute to the finals, Remo Stars second on the Group A standings behind Sporting Lagos FC, kick started their campaign in the Naija Super 8 with a 2-1 victory over the reigning 2022/2023 Nigeria Premier League Champions, Enyimba International FC.

The Sky Blue Stars then drew the second game against the Northwest representatives, Katsina United, a game that ended 1-1.

Remo Stars then lost the 2-1 in the third game of the Group A to Sporting Lagos FC in a dramatic fashion to book a place in the semi-finals as a second-placed team behind Sporting Lagos FC.

It's going to be a final to watch at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday as the next generation clubsides in the Southwest will battle for supremacy.
