Nagelsmann withdraws from the run to become the next Chelsea manager; Kompany and Pochettino head the shortlist- sources

Posted : 23 April 2023
Julian Nagelsmann has withdrawn from consideration to be the next head coach of Chelsea after a tumultuous day of developments that saw Mauricio Pochettino and Vincent Kompany on the club's four-man shortlist.

Nagelsmann, a former coach at Bayern Munich, recently met with Chelsea officials for a series of discussions that started off nicely. But the 35-year-old felt impatient and decided to withdraw on Friday since Chelsea is determined they want to finish a protracted and extensive search for the perfect candidate.

Sources close to Chelsea have repeatedly insisted that there is not -- and has never been -- a clear first-choice candidate and it has also been suggested that the club's due diligence on Nagelsmann produced mixed results, casting doubt internally over his suitability for the role.

After Tottenham Hotspur sacked Antonio Conte last month, Pochettino, who has been heavily linked with a return to his old club, had a discussion with Chelsea about the position. The chats, according to one person, were "nice and beneficial."

After less than seven months in charge, Graham Potter was sacked by Chelsea on April 3. According to sources speaking to ESPN on Friday, the search had been narrowed down to a four-person shortlist that featured Nagelsmann, Pochettino, Kompany, and one other unidentified individual.

Luis Enrique expressed his willingness to accept the role immediately during negotiations, but Chelsea's eventual choice to hire Lampard revealed they had other options in mind.

It will be interesting to observe whether Nagelsmann's departure prompts a reconsideration of Enrique.

Given that the former Manchester City defender merely announced his retirement from active play in 2020, Kompany's appearance in Chelsea's thinking is an intriguing development.
