My team showed character against Akwa United FC says Bayelsa United FC Coach, Diepreye Teibowei

The Chief Coach of Bayelsa United FC, Diepreye Teibowei on Sunday said that his team showed his team showed enough character in the come back win against visitors, Akwa United FC in the league opener played at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

He noted that the the team had played to instructions, thus the win.

``The match was a bit tough, it is not easy to come back thrice to win a match which shows our character and that we have tactical and technical players to deliver.

``This is our first match and we are trying to adapt and that is why I made the changes in the course of the match and we took over the job.

``The first goal conceived was an error by our defender, but being the first match, there is more work to be done and we can only get better,'' he said.

On his part, the Technical Adviser of Akwa United FC, Fatai Osho however described the loss as a big shame.

Bayelsa United pulled off a stunning 5-3 victory over Akwa United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on the first match of the season for both sidea.

The hosts scored five goals including a Robert Mizo hat trick, in a thrilling encounter at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.

The match started with a high tempo as Mohammed Hadi opened the scoring for Akwa in the 20th minute while Bayelsa United responded quickly and levelled the score in the 27th minute through Jerry Alex.

Oguntayo Seyi restored Akwa’s lead only for Robert Mizo to find the back of the net for both sides to go into the break tied at two all. 

For the second time in the game, Seyi gave the visitors the lead after restart and, similarly, Robert Mizo stepped up again to restore parity in the 81st minute

Mizo then gave the hosts the lead for the first time six minutes later. It looked to be finishing on these terms, with Akwa unable to find the net again, but Eyong Ofem added gloss to the scoreline with a fifth for Bayelsa.

The final whistle blew and Bayelsa United celebrated their remarkable win over Akwa United, who are currently bottom of the NPFL table. 

The result moved Bayelsa United to the top of the table, while Akwa United are at 20th.
