Mutiu Adepoju urges Super Eagles to make bold statement

Posted : 14 November 2024

Mutiu Adepoju, the former Real Madrid and Nigerian national team player, has expressed high expectations for the Super Eagles' upcoming match against Benin in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers. Scheduled for Thursday at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny, the match holds significant weight for both sides as they aim to advance in the competition.

Thursday’s match marks the third meeting between Nigeria and Benin this year. In their previous encounters, both teams claimed one win each, setting the stage for a decisive showdown. Despite the balanced results so far, Nigeria’s recent strong form positions them as favorites to secure a crucial victory.

Ahead of the encounter, Adepoju shared his thoughts on the match, emphasizing that Nigeria has much to gain. He urged the team to use this opportunity to make a powerful statement and remind Benin of their standing in African football.

Adepoju, a former midfielder, is hopeful the Super Eagles will not only deliver a win but also an impressive performance. “I’m expecting a good game and a victory from the Super Eagles,” he commented, adding that he believes they are capable of achieving both.

Winning this game is important, according to Adepoju, not only for qualification but to reaffirm Nigeria’s strength. He highlighted how a bold performance could shift perceptions, particularly following Benin’s previous win against Nigeria in June.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s players have the chance to assert their quality over Benin, showing that the June result was an outlier. Adepoju expressed confidence that a strong showing would bring pride to both the players and fans alike.

A victory for Nigeria would automatically secure their place in the 2025 AFCON. Meanwhile, Benin, equally motivated, will view this game as their opportunity to improve their chances of qualification.
