2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 24: Mustapha Umar shines as Kano Pillars edge Abia Warriors in hard-fought victory

Posted : 16 February 2025

Kano Pillars secured a crucial 1-0 win over Abia Warriors in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2024/25 Matchday 24 encounter at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Head Coach Ahmed Garba "Yaro Yaro" made a few changes to the side that triumphed over El-Kanemi Warriors in midweek.

New signing Alex Jerry replaced Abba Adam, who sealed a move to a Serbian club on the eve of the match, while Umar Sani Yakasai started in place of Naziru Auwalu.

On the bench, fresh additions Eze Charles and Gomino Eshimitu made their debuts in the matchday squad.

The four-time NPFL champions dominated the game from the onset but were wasteful in front of goal, with Rabiu Ali, Zulkifilu Muhammad, Alex Jerry, Mustapha Umar, and Rashid Alasan all coming close.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 42nd minute, sending the stadium into jubilation. Mustapha Umar calmly slotted home from Zulkifilu Muhammad's precise cross, giving the home side a deserved lead heading into the break.

Despite piling pressure on the visitors in the second half, Sai Masu Gida couldn't extend their lead. Abia Warriors had a few chances to level the score, but the host defense stood firm to secure the vital three points.

It was a second successive league victory for Kano Pillars, following their 2-1 triumph over El-Kanemi Warriors in midweek. The win propelled them to 8th place on the NPFL table with 35 points from 24 matches.

After the game, Mustapha Umar, who netted the decisive goal, was named Man of the Match by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano State Chapter, for his outstanding display. The lively winger tormented the Abia Warriors backline throughout the evening and was unfortunate not to bag a hat-trick.

Speaking in the post-match interview, Coach Ahmed Garba Yaro Yaro described the victory as a "morale booster" and shifted his focus to the crucial Matchday 25 away fixture against Sunshine Stars in Ikenne, Southwest Nigeria.
