Mourinho Sent Off as Fenerbahce Hold Struggling Manchester United to Europa League Draw

Posted : 25 October 2024

Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford ended in drama as the Fenerbahce manager was sent off during his team's 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the Europa League. The game marked another frustrating night for United and under-pressure coach Erik ten Hag, as they failed once again to secure their first European win of the season. United have now drawn all three of their Europa League fixtures, and with just three points, the team remains under scrutiny as they struggle to gain momentum in the competition.

Christian Eriksen opened the scoring for United in the 15th minute, converting after a slick move involving Alejandro Garnacho, Noussair Mazraoui, and Joshua Zirkzee. The goal was particularly impressive given United's depleted squad, with ten players sidelined due to injury or suspension, including captain Bruno Fernandes. Despite Ten Hag's confidence in the available lineup, United were unable to sustain their lead, as Fenerbahce's Youssef En Nesyri headed in an equalizer shortly after the break, capitalizing on a cross from Allan Saint-Maximin.

Throughout the match, United showed flashes of quality but lacked consistency. Manuel Ugarte, signed for £50 million from PSG, played a crucial role in United's defense, notably with a last-ditch tackle to deny Dusan Tadic. Andre Onana also made a remarkable double save to protect United's advantage just before halftime, but the team’s defensive fragility surfaced again in the second half, ultimately allowing Fenerbahce back into the game. Tempers flared when Mourinho's vocal protests over a penalty claim for Fenerbahce led to his dismissal by referee Clement Turpin, adding a tense note to the night.

United did push for a late winner, with Dominik Livakovic called into action to deny efforts from Mazraoui and Rasmus Hojlund. However, Ten Hag’s position remains precarious, with only four wins in the team’s first 12 games of the season. United's hopes of advancing in the Europa League are not yet extinguished, as they still have fixtures against teams like PAOK, Bodo Glimt, and Rangers. However, Ten Hag's future as manager could depend on how his team performs in these remaining matches.
