Moses Simon, the Nigerian international and Nantes winger, is set to be among the first players to receive a new award introduced by the organisers of Ligue 1. The French top-flight has unveiled the ‘Top Passeur’ badge, a new distinction recognizing the player with the most assists in the league. This award aims to celebrate creative talent, and Simon is currently in contention for it.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed the launch of this initiative on February 5, extending the concept of awarding players for their contributions, similar to the league’s top scorer accolade. Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé currently holds the goalscorer badge, having scored 14 goals in 20 matches, closely followed by Olympique Marseille’s Mason Greenwood with 13 goals and Lille’s Jonathan David with 12.
The introduction of the ‘Top Passeur’ badge further highlights the importance of assists in French football, a vital aspect of offensive play. Joao Neves of PSG became the first recipient of this new badge, having registered six assists in 16 appearances. However, Moses Simon, who also has six assists from 18 matches, is in strong contention to take over the honour, as he has displayed excellent creativity on the field.
While Simon shares the same number of assists as Neves, the Nigerian’s record of contributions has come in a higher number of games, showcasing his consistency. Alongside Simon, Strasbourg’s Dilane Bakwa also stands at six assists, but a standout performance from Simon in his next match could see him overtake Neves, making him the second recipient of the prestigious badge.
This season, Simon has been pivotal for Nantes, directly contributing to 11 goals in Ligue 1, including five goals and six assists. His performances have earned him recognition, as he has scored against several teams like Saint-Étienne, Rennes, and Montpellier, while his assists have come against clubs such as Lyon, Reims, and Angers.
Nantes will face Brest this weekend, and Simon will have the opportunity to continue his fine form and potentially leapfrog Neves in the race for the top assist provider badge. A couple of assists could be enough to secure his place as the league's leading playmaker, further cementing his status as one of the most dangerous attacking players in France.
With the season progressing, Moses Simon's role as a creative force for Nantes is undeniable, and the possibility of winning the ‘Top Passeur’ award adds another layer to his growing reputation in European football.
