Nantes, the French Ligue 1 club, has officially announced that Moses Simon, the Super Eagles forward, will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an injury sustained during Nigeria’s 2-0 defeat to Mali on Tuesday.
Simon, a key player called up for the national team's friendly matches against Ghana and Mali, featured in the first game against the Black Stars, playing for 19 minutes in Nigeria's 2-1 victory.
However, in the second match against Mali, Simon suffered an unfortunate collision with the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute, forcing him to be assisted off the field. Despite efforts from the Super Eagles coaching staff, he was unable to continue, and Cyriel Dessers replaced him. Nigeria ultimately lost the game 2-0.
Following the match, coach Finidi confirmed that Simon had been taken to the hospital to assess the severity of his injury.
Nantes has now disclosed that Simon has fractured his fibula, a development that will keep him out of action for at least three months, effectively ending his season with the club. Additionally, this injury will prevent him from participating in Nigeria's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa.
The timing of Simon's injury is particularly unfortunate for Nantes, as they currently occupy the 16th position in Ligue 1 and face the threat of relegation. With Simon having made 22 league appearances for Nantes this season and only eight games remaining, coach Antoine Kombouare must now find a suitable replacement.
