Morocco has made a historic debut at the Women's World Cup by reaching the last 16 after defeating Colombia, even though the South Americans progress as Group H winners.
Anissa Lahmari scored the decisive goal with a rebound after captain Ghizlane Chebbak's penalty was saved. With Germany's failure to beat South Korea, Morocco secured their place as runners-up in the group.
Morocco began brightly, showing promise in their attacking play. They continued to dominate the match until they finally took the lead. Chebbak's penalty was saved, but Lahmari was quick to pounce on the rebound and find the back of the net.
This remarkable victory means Morocco will face France in Adelaide in the knockout stage. Despite their defeat, Colombia, who earned two wins in their first two matches, will also advance to the last 16 as they finish above Morocco on goal difference. They will face Jamaica in Melbourne earlier on 8 August.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Morocco as one of the eight debutants in the 2023 Women's World Cup. While most of the other debutant teams had already exited the tournament, Morocco stood tall and delivered two impressive performances to secure a place in the knockout stage.
The men's team from Morocco also made history at Qatar 2022 by becoming the first African side to reach a FIFA World Cup semi-final. With the women's team now making their mark at the Women's World Cup, the country is celebrating a second historic football achievement in just one year.
