Former Rangers defender Craig Moore has compared the playing styles of Celtic's Daizen Maeda and Nigerian international Cyriel Dessers, particularly focusing on their attacking roles. In a recent analysis on Go Radio, Moore discussed Maeda's game, noting that both players tend to miss scoring chances despite showing effectiveness in their respective roles.
Moore acknowledged Maeda’s growing confidence, which has been evident in his ability to find himself in goal-scoring positions. He emphasized that these qualities are essential for a successful attacking player. Moore highlighted Maeda’s progress, pointing out that while he may not possess technical brilliance or individual flair, his efficiency in front of goal makes him an important asset.
"The confidence he has now is through the roof," Moore said. "He can score goals, as Brendan [Rodgers] has mentioned. He's not technically brilliant, and he doesn't rely on individual skills like dribbling or step-overs, but he is incredibly effective in what he does."
However, Moore also pointed out a potential issue with Maeda's game, comparing his missed opportunities to those of Dessers. He noted that while Maeda gets into scoring positions frequently, his tendency to miss chances could be a concern.
On the other hand, Dessers has faced difficulties this season with Rangers but has started to show a return to form under new manager Barren Ferguson. The Nigerian forward has found the net four times and provided one assist in his last three matches across all competitions, helping solidify his importance in the squad.
Dessers' recent performances have not gone unnoticed, and he has earned a place on the Super Eagles' provisional list ahead of Nigeria's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. His resurgence is a positive sign as he continues to make significant contributions for his team.
With both Maeda and Dessers excelling in their own ways, Moore's observations underscore how crucial it is for strikers to maintain their confidence and remain in goal-scoring positions, even if they sometimes miss opportunities.
