Mohamed Salah's Late Goal Secures Draw for Liverpool Against Arsenal

Posted : 28 October 2024

Mohamed Salah came to Liverpool’s rescue on Sunday, scoring a late equalizer to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal seemed poised for victory and on the brink of only their second defeat this season, but Salah’s strike in the 81st minute salvaged a crucial point for Liverpool. The match was a nail-biter from the outset, with Bukayo Saka opening the scoring for Arsenal, followed by Virgil van Dijk's header to level the game. Arsenal reclaimed the lead through Mikel Merino before halftime, only for Salah to equalize late in the match.

Injuries plagued Arsenal throughout, adding to the intensity and difficulty of holding their lead. Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber were both forced off in the second half due to injuries, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side stretched thin in defense. Already without Riccardo Calafiori, who was sidelined following a midweek injury, and William Saliba, who was suspended, Arsenal found themselves increasingly vulnerable against Liverpool’s attacking front. The defensive struggles ultimately gave Liverpool an edge, allowing them to capitalize on Arsenal’s weakened backline.

Manchester City emerged as the indirect beneficiaries of the draw, as their win against Southampton the day before left them one point ahead of Liverpool and five points clear of Arsenal, who sit in third place. Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool has been impressive, with this draw marking only their second non-win in 13 matches since his arrival. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s struggles continue, with only three wins in their last seven league games, a troubling trend that may hinder their hopes of ending their long title drought dating back to 2004.

Saka’s early goal gave Arsenal a strong start, slipping past Liverpool’s defense in the ninth minute after a pinpoint pass from Ben White. However, Merino’s lapse in concentration almost allowed Salah to equalize shortly afterward, but the forward’s shot narrowly missed. Liverpool found their equalizer in the 18th minute when Luis Diaz flicked on a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner, allowing van Dijk to head the ball into the net. Arsenal responded in the 43rd minute, with Declan Rice’s free-kick setting up Merino for a powerful header that reclaimed the lead.

Liverpool’s pressure intensified in the final minutes, leading to Salah’s decisive equalizer. With Timber off the field due to injury, Liverpool found gaps in Arsenal’s defense, and a perfectly timed pass from Alexander-Arnold set up Darwin Nunez. Nunez then slipped the ball to Salah, who made no mistake from close range, ending the game on level terms and leaving Arsenal frustrated as they watched their hopes for three points slip away.
