Mikel reveals Osimhen's true desire behind Chelsea deadline move

Posted : 09 September 2024

John Obi Mikel, a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champion, has shed light on Victor Osimhen's failed transfer to Chelsea on the final day of the transfer window. Mikel revealed that Osimhen was disappointed when his move to the Premier League club did not come to fruition.

Chelsea had been keen on signing the Nigerian forward and made significant efforts to complete the transfer before the deadline on August 30. Despite their strong interest in the 25-year-old striker, they could not finalize the deal in time, although they might revisit the opportunity in future transfer windows.

Osimhen had expressed a clear desire to play in the Premier League, and Mikel confirmed that his frustration with the failed transfer was genuine. Mikel discussed Osimhen's situation during an interview on The Obi One Podcast, highlighting the player's disappointment and the support Mikel offered him.

Mikel recounted their conversation after the transfer window closed, stating, "He really wanted to come to the club and was disappointed it didn’t happen. I spoke to him as soon as the transfer window shut, and we spent about 20 minutes talking. I reassured him that I’m always here for him."

He advised Osimhen to stay focused and continue working hard despite the setback. Mikel emphasized that although the situation was not ideal, Osimhen's strength of character would help him overcome the disappointment. He likened Osimhen’s determination to that of Didier Drogba and Diego Costa, traits that Chelsea could use.

Mikel encouraged Osimhen to remain diligent in his training and to enjoy time with his family while waiting for future opportunities. He reassured Osimhen that, despite the current setback, staying prepared would ensure he is ready for future chances.

After being excluded from Napoli's squad, Osimhen took the opportunity to join Galatasaray on a loan deal when the Turkish club showed interest. This move, completed last week, was partly why he joined the Super Eagles squad later than usual for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Osimhen scored in Nigeria’s recent victory over Benin and will aim to continue his form against Rwanda.
