Nigerian striker Mikel Obi has opened up about the aftermath of the controversial transfer incident between himself, Manchester United, and Chelsea in 2006, revealing that he received a stern "death stare" from former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson when they first met after he snubbed United in favor of Chelsea.
Following Mikel's impressive performances for the Flying Eagles in the 2005 World Youth Championship, numerous clubs expressed interest in signing him.
Manchester United appeared to have secured his services earlier in 2006, even releasing photos of him alongside Sir Alex Ferguson holding the club's jersey.
However, a few days later, Chelsea announced that Mikel had already committed to joining their club. Eventually, Mikel completed his move to the London side.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the transfer controversy, Mikel revealed his apprehension about meeting Sir Alex Ferguson face-to-face after what had transpired.
He recounted an encounter before a Manchester United vs. Chelsea match, where as he was exiting the dressing room, he crossed paths with Ferguson, causing him to feel quite nervous.
Mikel shared, "I saw him one time, it was Manchester United against Chelsea. I was coming out of the dressing room, and as I was coming out of the door at the corner, he was coming out, and I just s*** myself. I can't remember what happened; I think I tripped up on the stairs. He looked at me and just walked out. He started chewing his gum and just walked out. He didn't say a word."
Nevertheless, Mikel revealed that Sir Alex eventually forgave him for the transfer saga. "It was a death stare. I met him a few times after that, and we started talking about it, and he forgot about it and forgave me."
Mikel's decision to join Chelsea proved fruitful as he spent eleven successful years at the club, winning prestigious titles such as the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup during his tenure.
