Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has shared his thoughts on Victor Osimhen’s recent social media outburst aimed at former Super Eagles coach Finidi George. Mikel conveyed understanding toward Osimhen, suggesting that his frustration was justified given the circumstances surrounding the Nigerian national team.
Reports had previously suggested, though they were later disproven, that Finidi George blamed Nigeria’s defeat to Benin Republic on Osimhen’s absence and declared he wouldn’t beg any player to join the squad.
In reaction to these assertions, Osimhen conducted a heated 10-minute live session on social media, where he criticized the former assistant coach and expressed his disappointment and loss of respect for George.
During his live session, Osimhen stated, “You can talk nonsense. I have lost the respect I had for that man [Finidi]. I called him and asked to join the camp to support the team. I have all these conversations recorded.”
Reflecting on the situation, Mikel acknowledged that while Osimhen’s response may not have been perfect, he understood why the striker felt compelled to defend himself. He praised Osimhen for his humility but stressed that respect should be mutual.
Mikel stated, “Every time I speak to him, he’s very humble and respectful. Respect is reciprocal. I respect you, and you respect me. In this case, Osimhen felt unfairly treated and unprotected by the manager. Although his response might not have been ideal, he had the right to defend himself. I don’t hold anything against him for that, and knowing your worth isn’t arrogance.”
Despite the controversy, Osimhen has given Nigerian fans a reason to cheer, scoring promptly in Nigeria’s recent win over Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
