Mikel Arteta defends Arsenal, criticizes officiating in defeat

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has emphasized his "duty" to defend the club following his criticism of the officiating in the recent 1-0 defeat to Newcastle. Arteta had described the decision to allow Anthony Gordon's winning goal at St James' Park as "embarrassing" and a "disgrace."
Arsenal stood by Arteta's comments, despite some criticism of their club statement. Arteta stated, "It is my duty to stand in front of you and give a clear and honest assessment. My duty is to defend my players and my club in the best possible way, and I will continue to do so." He expressed his commitment to defending the club and its values.
The controversial goal had been subject to scrutiny by the video assistant referee (VAR) on three counts: whether the ball went out of play in the build-up, if there was a foul, and if there was an offside. All three decisions favored Newcastle. Arsenal labeled the refereeing "unacceptable" and stressed that players, coaches, and supporters "deserve better."
Arteta underlined the club's duty to express their feelings based on the evidence they have, emphasizing the unity and understanding within the club. He stated that this was not something special or different and that he would continue to defend the club until it is made right. Arsenal's defeat to Newcastle ended their unbeaten Premier League start, leaving them in fourth place, three points behind league leaders Manchester City. They are set to face Sevilla in the Champions League Group B on Wednesday.
