Middlesbrough coach confident in Iheanacho after challenging Sevilla spell

Posted : 04 February 2025

Middlesbrough manager, Michael Carrick, has expressed strong confidence in Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho, believing he will thrive at the Riverside Stadium. Despite being a relatively minor figure at Leicester City last season, Iheanacho contributed with five goals and one assist in 23 appearances, helping the team secure promotion to the Premier League under Enzo Maresca.

Iheanacho’s contract with Leicester expired last summer, and he moved to La Liga to join Sevilla. Unfortunately, his time in Spain didn’t go as planned, as he struggled to make an impact, scoring no goals in 401 minutes of league play. Sevilla subsequently signed Akor Adams from Montpellier for €5 million, leading to Iheanacho’s return to the English Football League, where he joined Middlesbrough on a six-month loan.

Carrick welcomed Iheanacho's arrival at the club and emphasized the importance of teamwork for their success. He pointed out that while there have been many changes within the squad, it has left them in a strong position moving forward. Carrick highlighted the need for collective responsibility and shared the belief that Middlesbrough has the right mix of talent to achieve their goals.

The former Manchester United captain also made it clear that Iheanacho isn’t expected to replace anyone specifically but rather to contribute to the team’s overall attacking efforts. Carrick emphasized that the team’s ability to create and score goals is vital, and Iheanacho’s quality will only enhance that dynamic.

Carrick was enthusiastic about the signing, praising Iheanacho’s experience and quality. He highlighted that the Nigerian forward is no stranger to success at the highest level, having spent years in the Premier League. Carrick expressed his satisfaction with the signing, feeling that Iheanacho brings invaluable experience and quality to the team.

Middlesbrough are currently positioned 7th in the EFL Championship standings, just outside the play-off spots by goal difference. With the addition of Iheanacho’s experience and talent, the club is hopeful that they can push forward and secure a spot in the play-off finals in May, a key goal for their promotion ambitions.

Iheanacho’s presence in the squad is expected to strengthen Middlesbrough’s chances as they aim to challenge for a place in the Premier League next season. His past performances in the top flight are seen as a valuable asset, and both Carrick and the club are optimistic about his impact on the team’s push for promotion.
