In a thrilling Gold Cup Final on Sunday evening at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California, Mexico secured their ninth Concacaf Gold Cup title with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama.
The hero of the moment was Santiago Gimenez, who came on as a second-half substitute and scored a sensational late winner in the 88th minute to seal the title for Mexico.
The first half saw few clear scoring opportunities for either side. Panama's Ismael Diaz had an early chance, but his shot was blocked, and Mexico's Uriel Antuna's attempt was saved by Panama's goalkeeper, Orlando Mosquera.
The best opportunity for Mexico came in the 42nd minute when a cross from Luis Romo found Orbelin Pineda, whose sweeping shot was saved by Mosquera, denying Henry Martin on the rebound.
In stoppage time of the first half, Panama's Anibal Godoy had a shot that narrowly missed the target, creating a tense atmosphere heading into the second half.
Panama remained resilient throughout the match and almost found a breakthrough in the 87th minute when Edgar Barcenas had a shot that went wide.
However, the decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Santiago Gimenez, who had just entered the game, received a pass from Pineda, turned around his defender, and confidently scored with his left foot to secure the dramatic 1-0 victory for Mexico.
The late goal from Gimenez sparked celebrations as Mexico claimed their ninth Concacaf Gold Cup, a memorable moment that will be cherished by the team and their fans for years to come.
