Mexico dominated their match against Honduras, securing a resounding 4-0 victory in the second Group B match of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup group stage. This win marked a significant milestone for debut head coach Jaime Lozano.
Mexico now boasts a record of 14 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses in opening matches at the Gold Cup, and they have won their last four encounters against Honduras in the tournament.
Mexico wasted no time and quickly took the lead as Luis Romo scored in the first minute with a powerful left-footed strike. They continued to pose a threat in the early stages, with Luis Chavez coming close to doubling the lead in the 19th minute. Romo completed his first international brace off a corner kick in the 23rd minute, extending Mexico's advantage to 2-0.
Honduras attempted to reduce the deficit, with Alexander Lopez and Deybi Flores having on-target opportunities. Jorge Benguche also had a chance, but Mexico held their two-goal lead going into halftime. In the second half, Mexico further asserted their dominance.
Orbelin Pineda drove into the box and unleashed a rocket into the bottom right corner, making it 3-0 in the 52nd minute. Chavez then added to the lead in the 64th minute with a left-footed strike, taking advantage of a deflected ball.
Despite Honduras' late attempts through Alberth Elis and Alexy Vega, Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made crucial interventions to preserve the clean sheet. Notably, Luis Romo's goal in the opening minute became the third-fastest goal in Gold Cup history, and he joined an elite group of players who scored a brace on their debut for Mexico.
Mexico's next match will be against Haiti on June 29th in a clash of group stage winners. Meanwhile, the two teams that suffered defeat in the first Group B match, Qatar and Honduras, will face each other at State Farm Stadium.
