Mexico advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup with a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in the quarterfinal match at AT&T Stadium. The win extends Mexico's unbeaten record against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup, with six wins and three draws in their encounters.
The first half saw both teams create promising opportunities, but they were unable to find the finishing touch to score a goal. Mexico came close to breaking the deadlock when Uriel Antuna made a dangerous run down the right wing, but Costa Rica managed to clear the danger.
In the second half, Mexico took the lead shortly after the break. They were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute after Henry Martin was fouled in the box by Kendall Waston. Orbelin Pineda stepped up to take the penalty and calmly converted, giving Mexico a 1-0 advantage.
Mexico had a chance to extend their lead in the 85th minute when Santiago Gimenez's shot from outside the box narrowly missed the target. However, they secured their second goal in the 87th minute when Roberto Alvarado set up Erick Sanchez for a close-range finish.
With the victory, Mexico now awaits the winner of the quarterfinal match between Jamaica and Guatemala in the semifinals of the tournament.
