Messi Surpasses 100 International Goals with Hat Trick in Argentina's Win Over Curacao
Posted : 11 April 2023
In the first half of Argentina's 7-0 friendly victory over Curacao on Tuesday in Santiago del Estero, Lionel Messi scored a hat trick to break the century milestone, making him just the third male player to do so.
In order to reach the extraordinary career milestone, the Paris Saint-Germain attacker picked up the ball in the centre of the area, cut to his right, and sent a low shot past the goalkeeper. He then scored a third on the counter-attack to bring his total to 102 before the half with another of his signature, bending strikes.
After scoring his 99th international goal — and 800th of his career — in Thursday's 2-0 victory over Panama, Messi reached the 100-goal milestone in his 174th appearance for his nation.
He is the second South American overall, behind Marta of Brazil, who has 109 goals for his nation, and the first male player from South America to reach the century milestone.
"I hope there will be more (Messi goals), he deserves all the praise and it's good that these goals had been on Argentine soil, that has a special value too," Lionel Scaloni, the Argentine coach, told reporters.
Argentina's match against Curacao was their second after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in December—their first major championship in 36 years.
Messi, 35, is currently third on the all-time men's list of top international goal scorers, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, who retired in 2007 after scoring 109 goals, and Ali Daei of Iran, who reached the century mark in September 2020 and now has 120 goals.
