Lionel Messi made a spectacular return from injury on Saturday, scoring twice and assisting another in Inter Miami's 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer. Messi had been sidelined since injuring his ankle during the Copa America final on July 14, missing eight MLS matches and Argentina's World Cup qualifiers. Despite the long absence, he quickly found his form, entering the starting lineup and making an immediate impact. Messi acknowledged the challenges of playing in Miami's heat and humidity but expressed joy at being back on the field.
Philadelphia took an early lead with Mikael Uhre’s goal in the second minute, but Messi equalized in the 26th minute after a brilliant sequence involving Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba. Just four minutes later, Messi scored again, this time converting a cross from Alba to put Inter Miami ahead. Suarez nearly made it 3-1 before halftime, but his goal was overturned by VAR. Messi's involvement continued throughout the match, and he provided an assist for Suarez’s injury-time goal, sealing the victory.
Miami coach Gerardo Martino praised Messi and Suarez for completing the full 90 minutes, noting that both players were in good form. The victory extended Inter Miami’s lead at the top of the MLS standings, putting them 10 points ahead of FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference with six games remaining. Messi's two goals brought his tally to 14 in 13 games, keeping him in the race for the MLS top scorer title, while Suarez now has 17 goals, trailing only Christian Benteke.
Messi was pleased with the team's performance, especially given the injuries that had affected their squad throughout the season. He credited the group’s resilience for maintaining their lead in the Supporters' Shield race, which rewards the team with the best overall record in MLS. Messi hopes Miami can finish the season on top, a goal that seems within reach as the team continues to dominate the league.
In his second season in the United States, Messi has quickly become one of MLS's standout players, achieving 15 goals and 15 assists faster than any other player in the league’s history, reaching the milestone in just 19 games.
