Messi Shines as Inter Miami Defeats Sporting Kansas City

Lionel Messi found the net once again as Inter Miami secured a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Tuesday, advancing to the CONCACAF Champions Cup last 16 with a 4-1 aggregate win. After scoring in the first leg played in freezing conditions in Kansas City, Messi wasted little time in the return fixture, striking in the 19th minute at a much warmer Chase Stadium. Assisted by his former Barcelona teammate Luis Suárez, he capitalized on poor defending to slot the ball into the bottom corner.

 

Sporting Kansas City briefly thought they had equalized when Dejan Joveljic rounded Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and scored, but his effort was ruled offside. Miami extended their lead in first-half stoppage time when Messi played Jordi Alba down the left, and the Spaniard's cross found Tadeo Allende, who finished from close range. Moments later, a poor clearance from Kansas City's Jacob Davis gifted Suárez an opportunity, and he made no mistake in converting to make it 3-0 on the night.

 

The visitors pulled one back in the 63rd minute when Memo Rodríguez's long-range strike took a deflection off Maximiliano Falcón, wrong-footing Ustari. However, the goal was only a consolation as Miami comfortably sealed their place in the next round. They will now face Jamaican side Cavalier, the reigning Caribbean Cup champions, with the first leg set to take place in Florida in early March.
