Messi's Unprecedented Eight Ballon d'Or Triumphs: A legendary journey

Posted : 31 October 2023
In an unprecedented feat, Lionel Messi has clinched an astonishing eight Ballon d'Or awards within a remarkable span of 15 years. His extraordinary record seems almost insurmountable, setting a standard that may stand the test of time.

Recently, on a Monday that will be etched in football history, Messi once again emerged victorious, reaffirming his status as the world's premier individual talent. This victory prompts a reflective journey through the times when he lifted the coveted Ballon d'Or.

Fourteen years ago, Messi seized his first Ballon d'Or after orchestrating Barcelona's first-ever treble triumph, securing the Spanish championship, Copa del Rey, and Champions League. His 2008 goals during the 2009/10 season, including a memorable strike in the Champions League final against Manchester United, were instrumental in this achievement.

His leadership extended to conquering European Supercups, Spanish Supercups, and Club World Cups, earning nearly every conceivable accolade. Notably, it was the inaugural instance of a home player winning the title in Barcelona's history.

The following year, the Ballon d'Or merged with the FIFA Footballer of the Year award, sparking controversy. Despite detractors, Messi outshone his Barcelona compatriots, Andres Iniesta and Xavi, securing the title. He amassed 47 goals during the 2009/10 season and added another title to his name with Barcelona.

Yet, his journey was marred by a loss in the Champions League semi-finals to Mourinho's Inter and Argentina's World Cup disappointment, bowing out in the quarter-finals with a 4-0 loss to Germany.

In 2011, there was no debate as Messi triumphed after clinching the Spanish championship and Champions League with Barcelona. His 2010 goals across all competitions in the 2011/12 season, including a dozen in the league, solidified his victory. The success underscored Barcelona's prominence, with Messi leading the way.

In 2012, he etched his name in history by amassing an astounding 91 goals in a single calendar year, besting Gerd Muller's record. Despite capturing the Copa del Rey, Barcelona faced adversity, exiting the Champions League in the semi-finals against Chelsea. However, Messi's 50 goals in the 2011/12 Spanish league season and 91 goals overall for Barcelona were undeniable achievements.

Following a brief hiatus from the Ballon d'Or summit with Cristiano Ronaldo's wins in 2013 and 2014, Messi returned to claim the title. This resurgence coincided with Barcelona's MSN trio (Messi-Suarez-Neymar) securing a treble, which included the Champions League. In the 2014/15 season, Messi showcased his prowess with 58 goals and 31 assists across all competitions. His triumph overshadowed the disappointment of Argentina's loss in the 2014 World Cup final to Germany.

The subsequent years saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric briefly break the duopoly shared with Messi. Nevertheless, the 2018/19 season shone brightly for Messi, with 51 goals in all competitions and a Spanish championship for Barcelona. Despite Barcelona's challenging journey, voters opted for Messi, who edged out Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo. This win marked his sixth Ballon d'Or, setting a remarkable and unbroken streak.

The absence of the 2020 award due to the COVID-19 pandemic stirred debate. Robert Lewandowski, who achieved remarkable success with Bayern Munich, was a notable contender. Messi, during this period, led Barcelona to a Copa del Rey victory but left for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

Nonetheless, he carried Argentina to Copa America glory and emerged as the tournament's top scorer alongside Luis Diaz, likely influencing the decision in his favor. In 2023, Messi's move to Inter Miami marked a shift away from European football. His eighth Ballon d'Or win was undoubtedly spurred by his pivotal role in leading Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar, underscoring his status as a football legend.
