Messi's path back to Argentina: A return to Newells Old Boys looms in 2025

Posted : 06 October 2023

Spain has announced that the legendary star, Leo Messi, will remain committed to his contract in the United States. However, a twist awaits in the summer of 2025, as Messi has set his sights on returning to Argentina to conclude his illustrious career with his beloved youth club, Newells.

Messi embarked on a new journey in his career with a flurry of impactful goals for Inter Miami, igniting hopes of a prolonged stay with the club. The prospect of witnessing Messi's magic in Miami for years to come seemed plausible. However, fate had other plans when an injury sidelined Messi from Miami's last four matches. Recent reports from Spain have now suggested that Miami won't be his final destination.

Reports indicate that Messi won't be extending his contract with Miami, paving the way for a nostalgic return to Newells Old Boys. It's the very team where his footballing journey commenced, shaping him into the global football icon we know today, before his move to Barcelona at a tender age. Messi's existing contract with Miami spans two more seasons, and he is determined to honor it, much like his commitment at Paris Saint-Germain.

This decision signifies Messi's intention to make a homecoming to Argentina in the summer of 2025, at the age of 38. Despite his advancing years, Messi remains a force to be reckoned with on the field, provided he avoids injuries. However, his earnings are expected to see a significant drop compared to his current hefty salary in the US, which amounts to approximately $50 million per season.

Messi's stint with Inter Miami thus far has seen him make 12 appearances, delivering an astounding 11 crucial goals. However, his absence from the last four games, including the cup final, has been notable. In the MLS, he has graced the pitch only four times, finding the net once.

Currently, Messi is in the process of resuming training with Inter Miami, but the team, under the guidance of Tata Martino, is exercising caution. They recognize the need to tread carefully, avoiding any risks of aggravating his injury. Argentina's plan is to gradually reintegrate him, with the possibility of featuring in at least part of the upcoming match against Cincinnati, before rejoining the squad for the crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures against Paraguay and Peru in the South American group.
