Messi's Inter Miami to Face Al Ahly in Opening Match of New FIFA Club World Cup

Posted : 06 December 2024

The new 32-team FIFA Club World Cup will kick off on June 15 with Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, taking on Egypt's Al Ahly in the tournament opener. Miami earned their spot in the competition after finishing at the top of the MLS standings, with Messi's former club Barcelona’s Brazilian player Neymar set for a reunion with Real Madrid in Group H.

Joining Messi’s team in Group A will be Palmeiras from Brazil and Porto from Portugal, adding further excitement to an already high-profile tournament.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino spoke about the event, calling it a milestone that would "start a new era in club football." Twelve European clubs will participate, with one of the standout fixtures being Manchester City’s clash against Juventus in Group G.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain finds itself in a challenging group alongside Atletico Madrid, Copa Libertadores winners Botafogo of Brazil, and Seattle Sounders.

Despite facing some skepticism about its necessity, the tournament has generated support, especially among the clubs involved. Some have expressed concerns over the tournament adding more fixtures to an already packed schedule, but many club officials remain enthusiastic.

The event is expected to draw considerable attention, particularly in the United States, where the tournament will be hosted. US President-elect Donald Trump extended his best wishes in a video message before the draw, which was broadcast live from Miami.

Celebrities and football figures, including former Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero, participated in the draw, which was presented by Ivanka Trump and featured appearances from public figures like model Adriana Lima.

The tournament’s final will take place on July 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, as teams from across the globe compete for the prestigious title. The tournament will also be streamed for free globally, thanks to FIFA’s new partnership with DAZN.

Despite some resistance from organizations like FIFPro and the European Leagues body, who have filed complaints against FIFA regarding the added workload for players, many clubs and leagues are showing strong support.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi expressed excitement for the tournament, emphasizing its potential to boost brands in the US, while MLS Commissioner Don Garber highlighted the growing interest and anticipated fan engagement from North American audiences.
