Messi's Ballon d'Or remarks to Haaland were disrespectful

On the memorable evening of October 30, Lionel Messi achieved his remarkable eighth Ballon d'Or, securing football's most prestigious honor once again. The 36-year-old Argentine triumphed over strong competition, including Manchester City's prolific Erling Haaland, whose extraordinary goal-scoring feats contributed to a treble-winning season.
In a customary acceptance speech at the magnificent Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Messi's words took an unexpected turn as he extended his gratitude. "I express my heartfelt thanks to all, particularly my teammates, and to those who cast their votes in my favor. This Ballon d'Or stands as a cherished gift to all of Argentina. Let's not forget the brilliance of Haaland and Mbappé, both having had spectacular years. I'm confident that in the years to come, they will secure this accolade," Messi spoke in his native language. He went on to acknowledge his family and concluded with a touching tribute to his late idol, Diego Maradona, whose birthday coincided with the award ceremony.
However, it was Messi's references to his fellow podium occupants, particularly Erling Haaland, that stirred a touch of controversy. On the surface, Messi's intention was to show respect and offer words of encouragement to the emerging generation aspiring to follow in his footsteps. Yet, some believed that the Ballon d'Or stage might not have been the most fitting moment for such remarks.
Many voices argued that Haaland had a strong case for the 2023 Ballon d'Or, considering his incredible 52 goals in 53 matches across all competitions, contributing to Manchester City's treble victory. While Messi was unquestionably deserving of the award, it was understandable for Haaland to feel a sense of missed opportunity. As Messi turned to Haaland to say, "Erling deserved it very much too, having secured the Premier League and Champions League titles while being the top scorer in everything," one couldn't help but wonder how the young striker truly felt.
From Messi's perspective, this was likely meant as a kind and encouraging message, but it could easily be interpreted differently – as slightly condescending and a subtle taunt. This situation bore an uncanny resemblance to how Robert Lewandowski had reacted to a similar scenario in 2021.
