Argentine star Lionel Messi will miss Inter Miami's Leagues Cup knockout match against the Columbus Crew on Tuesday, as confirmed by Miami's coach Gerardo Martino. Messi, who suffered a right ankle injury during Argentina's 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final last month, has yet to rejoin his Miami teammates in training since he was seen leaving the walking boot.
The Leagues Cup features teams from both MLS and Liga MX, and Messi played a key role in leading Miami to the inaugural title last year. The upcoming match pits last year's MLS champions, Columbus Crew, against Miami, the current top team in the league standings. This game is one of eight matches scheduled to determine the quarterfinal matchups, which will be finalized by Friday and Saturday.
The round of 16 kicks off on Monday with the Seattle Sounders hosting Mexico's Pumas, whom they previously defeated in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League final. Tuesday's knockout matches include Philadelphia vs. Cincinnati, Cruz Azul vs. Mazatlan, Tigres vs. New York City, Toluca vs. Colorado, Club America vs. St. Louis, and San Jose vs. Los Angeles FC.
