Messi, Haaland, and Mbappé headline FIFA's The Best Men's Player Shortlist; Declan Rice among nominees

Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappé are among the top contenders in the 12-player shortlist for FIFA's The Best Men's Player award. England midfielder Declan Rice, who led former club West Ham United to success in the Europa Conference League, has also been nominated.
Messi, the Argentina captain who now plays for MLS side Inter Miami, is looking to secure the award for a record third time, having previously won it in 2019 and 2022. Despite his triumph in leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022, Messi faces strong competition from Manchester City forward Haaland, who scored 52 goals as his team achieved a Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup treble last season.
The shortlist includes Julián Álvarez, Marcelo Brozovic, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gündogan, Rodri, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Victor Osimhen, and Bernardo Silva alongside Messi, Haaland, Mbappé, and Rice.
In the women's category, Spain, the winners of the Women's World Cup in Australia last month, have four players nominated for the award: Aitana Bonmatí, Jenni Hermoso, Mapi León, and Salma Paralluelo. They are vying to succeed La Roja midfielder Alexia Putellas as the winner of the trophy.
The remaining nominees for the women's award are Linda Caicedo, Rachel Daly, Kadidiatou Diani, Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler, Alex Greenwood, Amanda Ilestedt, Lauren James, Sam Kerr, Hinata Miyazawa, and Keira Walsh, with Lindsey Horan being the sole United States player to make it onto the shortlist.
