Megan Rapinoe's bittersweet farewell: Career ends abruptly due to injury in NWSL final
Posted : 12 November 2023
Megan Rapinoe's farewell on the San Diego pitch turned bittersweet as the acclaimed footballer endured a crushing three-minute cameo, marking the abrupt conclusion of her celebrated career. The National Women's Soccer League final, featuring OL Reign and NJ/NY Gotham FC, became the poignant stage for the American star's farewell, which was marred by a suspected torn Achilles tendon.
Expressing her emotions, the two-time World Cup champion, aged 38, conveyed, "It was a tough one. It's definitely not how I envisioned this last one going." Tearfully acknowledging the support she received throughout her journey, Rapinoe shared, "Thank you to everyone who's been on the journey for all this time. It's been amazing - maybe besides this. I couldn't have written it any different."
Despite her stellar contributions that aided the USA in securing two World Cups and an Olympic gold, the NWSL title eluded Rapinoe, culminating her illustrious 11-season tenure with the Seattle-based Reign as NJ/NY Gotham FC clinched a 2-1 victory in her final match.
This marked the fulfillment of her declaration made in July, just ahead of her fourth World Cup appearance, announcing her retirement at the NWSL season's end. Her international career concluded following USA's elimination in the round of 16 by Sweden, culminating with a friendly win over South Africa in Chicago in September. Accumulating 203 caps and netting 63 goals, Rapinoe's legacy encompasses triumphs in the World Cup of 2015 and 2019, alongside the 2012 Olympics.
Rapinoe's illustrious career spanned multiple teams, predating the NWSL's inception in 2012, including stints with Sydney FC and Lyon, contributing to Lyon's French league victory in 2013.
