Megan Rapinoe bids farewell to international soccer in emotional victory against South Africa

Posted : 25 September 2023
Megan Rapinoe bid farewell to her international career as the USA triumphed 2-0 against South Africa in Chicago, marking the end of an era for the iconic forward. Rapinoe had announced her intention to retire after the conclusion of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) season ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

Over her illustrious career, Rapinoe, at the age of 38, earned her debut for the USA in 2006 and amassed an impressive 203 caps, netting 63 goals. She played a pivotal role in securing World Cup victories for her team in 2015 and 2019.

The emotional moment at Sunday's friendly in Soldier Field left Rapinoe deeply moved by the reception from fans. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "It has been really wonderful, to hear all the nice things, to have a closure moment, to play in front of a big crowd again. I'll miss it forever. I don't think I'll ever be at a moment where it will feel perfect, but this is pretty close."

Rapinoe started the game and received a standing ovation when she was substituted after 54 minutes. She has represented the USA in four World Cups and was part of the gold-winning team at the 2012 Olympics in London. However, the 2023 World Cup saw her, along with two teammates, miss crucial penalties as they were eliminated by Sweden in the last 16.

Following the victory against South Africa, Rapinoe delivered a heartfelt speech, trying to hold back tears, as she thanked fans for their unwavering support throughout her 17-year career. She expressed, "I feel like I've been able to grow up in front of all of you. It has been such an honour to be able to wear this shirt and play with all these amazing players and to just live out my childhood dream, casually, just like in front of the world."

Rapinoe emphasized the broader significance of their off-field efforts, stating, "We fought so hard off the field to continue to create more space for ourselves to be who we are but hopefully in turn more space for you guys to be who you are. I'm not going to go away forever. Don't worry. I'm one of you guys now."

Rapinoe is set to retire from professional football on October 15 when OL Reign, her NWSL side, plays their final game of the season against Chicago Red Stars.
