Porto has issued a medical update regarding Zaidu Sanusi through their official website, revealing that the Nigerian international underwent surgery on his left knee. The procedure, led by Prof. José Carlos Noronha at Hospital São Francisco do Porto on February 26, aimed to address ligament injuries sustained during Porto's 2-0 victory over Estrela da Amadora on February 17. The surgery, described as uneventful by the Primeira Liga club, indicates that the operation proceeded as planned.
Zaidu Sanusi, who featured for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and the external lateral ligament of his left knee. Despite the successful surgery, Porto has not provided a specific timeline for his return to action. Manager Sérgio Conceição, however, announced that Zaidu will be sidelined for the remainder of the season, facing a minimum recovery period of seven months.
The surgery was conducted by Prof. José Carlos Noronha, recognized as Cristiano Ronaldo's most trusted doctor by the Spanish sports daily Marca. Dr. Noronha is renowned worldwide as one of the best knee specialists and has treated notable football stars like Pepe, Radamel Falcao, Hulk, Angel Di Maria, Arjen Robben, and Ansu Fati.
Zaidu's absence from the upcoming fixtures includes the Super Eagles' friendly against Argentina on March 26 and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin in June 2024. The defender's recovery process will require an extended period of rehabilitation, and Porto is expected to provide updates on his progress. The successful surgery reflects the commitment to Zaidu's health and underscores the significance of expert medical care in football.
