McBurnie's historic penalty rescues Sheffield United in Premier League thriller

Posted : 21 January 2024

In a dramatic Premier League clash, Sheffield United's Oli McBurnie etched his name in history by scoring the latest-ever goal, a 103rd-minute penalty, securing a vital point against West Ham.

The late drama unfolded when Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola fouled McBurnie in the 98th minute, leading to a delayed penalty. McBurnie, showing composure, blasted the ball past substitute goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, forcing Areola to exit after receiving treatment.

Initially, West Ham seemed set for a 2-1 victory, with James Ward-Prowse converting a penalty in the 79th minute. Maxwel Cornet had earlier given the Hammers a first-half lead, countered by Ben Brereton Diaz's equalizer just before halftime on his Premier League debut.

The second half witnessed heightened tension, featuring two red cards and penalty appeals. Sheffield United's Rhian Brewster was sent off for a high tackle, and Tomas Soucek received a second booking after demanding Brewster's expulsion. The thrilling encounter also saw West Ham's late penalty appeal denied.

Despite the late heroics, Sheffield United remains at the bottom of the Premier League table, seven points adrift from safety. While the Blades showcased attacking prowess, exemplified by Diaz's goal, defensive challenges persist.

Conceding 50 goals after 21 games or fewer, they joined an exclusive group with defensive struggles akin to Barnsley in 1997-98 and West Brom in 2020-21. The late equalizer brought joy to Sheffield United fans but highlighted the uphill battle they face in avoiding relegation.
