Kylian Mbappe's struggles continued with a lackluster performance in Real Madrid's 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday, where he failed to significantly impact the game and missed a penalty. Since joining the Spanish club from Paris Saint-Germain in June, the French striker has faced challenges, scoring just one goal in five Champions League appearances and only one goal in his last six games across all competitions.
Despite these setbacks, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti defended Mbappe, describing him as an "extraordinary" player who simply needed support and time to adjust. Ancelotti acknowledged that Mbappe might be experiencing a lack of confidence but emphasized the importance of patience and continued hard work.
He also pointed out that missing a penalty was a common occurrence for players and that Mbappe should not be overly criticized for it.
Ancelotti was also quick to praise Liverpool, stating that the result was fair and that their high-intensity play had deservedly earned them the victory. Although Real Madrid currently sit 24th in the 36-team league and are at risk of missing out on the knockout phase, Ancelotti remained confident that their form would improve and that they would be competing in the next round, as they have in previous years.
Midfielder Jude Bellingham echoed Ancelotti's sentiments about Liverpool's superior performance and added that the team was disappointed in their own display. He also offered support for Mbappe, acknowledging the immense pressure on him due to his reputation.
Bellingham stressed that the penalty miss was not the reason for the defeat, emphasizing that Liverpool simply outplayed them, and he was confident Mbappe would produce many more significant moments for the club in the future.
