Real Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Getafe on Sunday, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the second goal to help the Spanish champions move into second place in La Liga. Despite criticism of his recent performances, Mbappe found the net following Jude Bellingham's opening penalty. The win moved Madrid within one point of league leaders Barcelona, who suffered a defeat to Las Palmas on Saturday. Madrid also have a game in hand over both Barcelona and third-placed Atletico Madrid.
The match started with Getafe attempting to slow the game, and they largely succeeded until a foul by Allan Nyom on Antonio Rudiger inside the penalty area. Bellingham, who had missed a penalty in midweek against Liverpool, stepped up to take the spot-kick. He successfully outwitted Getafe goalkeeper David Soria, converting his third goal in as many league games to give Madrid the lead.
Mbappe doubled Madrid’s advantage just before halftime with a brilliant strike. After Bellingham played him a pass on the left wing, Mbappe cut inside and curled a low shot past Soria into the far corner. The French forward had several more chances to add to his tally, including a chipped pass to Brahim Diaz, but the effort sailed over the bar. He also missed a one-on-one with Soria and sent another shot wide, while Getafe couldn’t capitalize on his missed opportunities.
Despite his struggles in front of goal, Mbappe's first-half strike helped secure Madrid's third consecutive La Liga win. In the second half, Getafe had a chance to pull one back when John Patrick’s powerful shot hit both the crossbar and post. Mbappe later misfired from close range in stoppage time, but Madrid managed to keep their lead intact. With three points in the bag, Madrid will look to build on this performance as they face Athletic Bilbao in midweek.
