Mbappé, Álvarez Shine in 1-1 Madrid Derby Draw

Kylian Mbappé marked his debut in the Madrid derby with an equalizing goal, following Julián Álvarez's early Panenka penalty in the match. This 1-1 draw at the Bernabéu was the fourth such result in the last five league meetings between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, with both teams unable to break the deadlock after 90 minutes. The result meant Real Madrid maintained their one-point lead at the top of the standings, and neither side could claim the head-to-head advantage.

 

The spotlight was on Mbappé and Álvarez in the lead-up to the derby, as both were in superb goalscoring form heading into the match. Both players had joined La Liga clubs in the summer, with Mbappé making his first appearance in the Madrid derby and Álvarez playing in his second, though this was his first at the Bernabéu. Álvarez, stepping up for the spot kick, remained composed despite a lengthy VAR review and the referee's pause to clear the box, converting with a calm Panenka finish past Thibaut Courtois.

 

Álvarez's penalty was a moment of brilliance, especially given Courtois' reputation for saving penalties. Reflecting on his cool execution, Álvarez admitted there were nerves but expressed confidence in his decision, knowing exactly what he wanted to do. His composed finish provided Atlético with the opening goal, and his performance alongside Mbappé highlighted their ability to rise to the occasion in high-pressure moments.
