Kylian Mbappé recently explained his rationale for choosing Lionel Messi for the Ballon d'Or, citing Messi's World Cup victory as a decisive factor. The PSG star, who faced Messi in a memorable World Cup final, acknowledged Messi's status as one of the greatest players in history and emphasized that his achievements at the World Cup surpassed those of other contenders like Haaland, including Mbappé himself. Despite being a known Cristiano Ronaldo fan, Mbappé recognized Messi's deserving claim to the Ballon d'Or.
 
Reflecting on the aftermath of the World Cup final on December 18, Mbappé admitted that the loss not only meant missing out on the World Cup but also conceding the Ballon d'Or to Messi, acknowledging Messi's honest and justified triumph.
 
In a subtle dig at his current coach, Luis Enrique, Mbappé contrasted the coaching styles of Enrique and his previous coach, Didier Deschamps. Mbappé hinted that Deschamps provides him with more freedom on the field, while Enrique tends to give more specific instructions. Despite recognizing the quality of both coaches, Mbappé expressed the value of adapting to their distinct coaching approaches for his own development.
